Sacred Mongolia: Self Guided Journey Guide

£47.00

Twelve days beneath the eternal blue sky, where wild horses run and blue silk sings on the wind.

Mongolia is a land of enormous skies and living tradition, where herders still offer milk to the four directions, monks chant in rebuilt temples and every high pass is crowned with an ovoo of stones and blue silk. This guide is your companion to the sacred heart of central Mongolia: a twelve day loop from Ulaanbaatar through monasteries, holy mountains, wild horse country, ancient capitals, waterfalls, hot springs and Bronze Age deer stones, with honest advice on drivers, stays and eats and simple rituals to help you connect at every step.

What to expect

You begin in Ulaanbaatar with the morning chants of Gandan Monastery, the oracle temple of Choijin Lama and the Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan, then head out to the holy mountain of Bogd Khan Uul, the ruins of Manzushir and the blue silk wrapped Mother Rock, Eej Khad. From there you travel into the granite valleys of Gorkhi Terelj, to Turtle Rock and the elephant shaped Aryabal Meditation Temple, and on to Hustai to watch the wild takhi horses come down to drink at dusk.

Heading west, you walk among the ruins of Övgön beneath Khögnö Khan and the golden dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai, then arrive in Kharkhorin for Erdene Zuu and its 108 stupas, the turtle rocks and the fertility stone. In the UNESCO Orkhon valley you climb to Zanabazar's hermitage at Tövkhön, rest by the red waterfall of Ulaan Tsutgalan, soak in the Tsenkher hot springs and finish among the inscriptions of Taikhar Chuluu, the deer stones of the Khoid Tamir valley and a night with a nomad family on the Tamir river.

Expect salty milk tea and the smell of juniper smoke, wind snapping through blue silk, the thunder of a waterfall and a night sky so full of stars it feels close enough to touch.
